"I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate."

It's called the democratic system, Arlen - judging your record is the electorate's job and purpose. If you're unwilling to let them do their job, or if your principles truly will not let you run as a Republican, then the honorable solution is not to seek re-election.

I've never seen a more shameless hop up onto the bandwagon.

And for what it's worth, I'm an unaffiliated moderate - I really dug Specter's style. Now it just seems cheap.

[He does still have the coolest voice and possibly the coolest name in the Senate, though...]

As I say, I have always defended Specter.

But, if at eighty years-old, you are not prepared to make your best case, accept that verdict, and walk away if it doesn't go your way--then you have lost the proper perspective on what public office is all about.
