I'm not sure if it's necessarily a nod to the patriotic contribution of AmerIndians or more of a sign that the DoD is trying to avoid religious/ethnic controversy (I'm thinking the Wiccan headstone in Arligton debate, the controversy around low numbers of Muslim Chaplains, etc.)

Regarding the higher enlistment rate: I don't have any anecdotal evidence concerning Indians in the armed forces, but have noticed that proportion of Hispanics in the military seems to be higher than their percentage of the population. I know many first-generation American citizens of Hispanic origen currently serving proudly.
