07/04: The World Upside Down

We live in strange times.
We spend more money on weddings than ever before, and marriages are becoming temporary.
We have an abundance of time and labor-saving devices, and live more hectic lives.
We use more coarse language in public, but villify any speech that might offend certain groups.
And we exercise more moral discipline in regard to our eating, than in regard to our sex lives.
Food, Sex, and Conscience by James Tonkawich.

An interesting and challenging post.
Humanity i general and Christians in particular do not seem to be able to strike a balance with regard to our appetites and our morality. There seems to be no end to our ability to strain at gnats or to swallow camels.
While I tent to agree that our current social mores’ are more out of balance than when we were young, or when our parent were, I do think that the strict sexual morality needed to heed Lewis's point that God is not a prude, and neither should his children be. I also think that the meat and starch and buttered/baconed, overcooked (canned) vegetable crowd would benefit physically (and morally) from a more balanced and honest attitude to eating.
This evening I was struck by another parallel of upside downness - My daughter wanted to bake some cookies "before Mom and Grandpa got here"
Of course like any sensible person baking cookies she wanted to eat some cookie dough. And of course I followed the modern parent's rule book regarding no raw eggs ever.
I would not, however, follow the other chapters of the modern parent's rule book - The one you hear quoted frequently of late that says that "sexting" is just what teenagers do - not something wrong"
