Did Edwards do no research into those two before signing them on? Even if he agreed with their views he ought to have known how volatile and divisive they are and can be. I'd compare it to a GOP candidate hiring Ann Coulter as his blogger.

This speaks toward his decision-making ability. Who would he choose for cabinet positions if elected?

This will be an issue eventually. It is at this moment percolating. But I predict that this will all be more grist for our mill in our conversation about friendly versus unfriendly media coverage.

With one caveat: as long as Hillary is fighting for her life out in the year-long Demo primary, a lot of these rules go out the window. We are about to witness an internecine war among the left-leaning media.

PS: For the sake of clarity: I think this will soon be a significant setback for Edwards.

Joab, I think you have nailed the significant issue here: John Edwards decision making.

Farmer, interesting point about the now-divided left-leaning media as Edwards, Clinton, Obama, and company jostle and spar. Even more interesting if Gore comes into the race. (Also, the MSM coverage of McCain this year will be interesting to see.)

In re McCain:

I think we are already seeing the great decay of friendly coverage for McCain, which will accelerate in the months leading up to the election if McCain looks like he will be the nominee. If McCain is derailed, he will rise once again as the darling of the MSM.

I have read elsewhere the opinion that Edwards hired those two, and did not fire them, in order to court the far left Netroots faction. It is opined that the Netroots vote is important for Dem candidates, and Edwards is that group's favorite among the candidates. If he had fired them he would have strongly risked angering the Netroots faction.

If true, he's playing a strategy he feels will best help him get the nomination, but I agree that it will come back to bite him at some point, and the bigger the story becomes the bigger the bite.

Although Edwards must be taken seriously because of his strength in the polls and his experience in Democratic campaigns, this incident is one of the many things about Edwards that convinces me that he is not someone who has a chance to be elected president of the United States.
